The International Symposium "Advances in Concrete through Science and Engineering" organized by the Center for Advanced Cement Based Materials (ACBM) at Northwestern University and the International Union of Laboratories of Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures (RILEM) in Evanston, Illinois, on March 21-24, 2004, in conjunction with the RILEM spring meeting, deals with three important areas in modern concrete science and engineering: early-age behavior, durability, and fiber reinforcement. Arnon Bentur is one of the few people who have made notable contributions to advances and innovations in all three of these areas. To honor Prof. Bentur's 60th birthday, his service to research and engineering and to recognize his national and international leadership in cement and concrete science and technology, a special symposium is held in his honor, on 24 March 2004.
The career of Prof. Bentur has been characterized by a combination of contributions to the advanced scientific research of construction materials, and the dissemination and application of this know-how to the engineering profession through applied research and leading activities in standardization.
The unique contribution of Arnon Bentur is in intertwining these fields into meaningful and oriented activities, and thus to provide an impact across the entire profession. His contributions have had, and continue to have, major impact on a variety of topics, such as the engineering and fundamentals of the long term performance of fiber reinforced concretes, the durability of silica fume concretes, the composite nature of high strength concretes, the control of early age cracking in advanced cementitious systems, and the development of special binders such as cement-gypsum-silica fume and oil shale ash cements.
