Abstract: This study is a part of an ongoing project on the use of AC-Impedance Spectroscopy (AC-IS) to monitor dispersion of fibers in fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs). The main objective of the project is to develop AC-IS as a non-destructive tool for characterization of fiber dispersion at early ages of FRCs. For this purpose the ability of AC-IS to monitor different dispersion issues was studied. Dispersion issues were classified as preferred orientation, macro-scale segregation and micro-scale aggregation of fibers. AC-IS measurements were carried out on both fresh and hardened FRC samples. A new local probe method was introduced for monitoring macro-scale inhomogeneities in fiber distribution. A dispersion function, which was proposed in a previous paper [1], was employed to describe the level of dispersion for well-dispersed fibers with micro-scale inhomogeneities. Based on the experimental results, AC-IS is a promising technique for non-destructive evaluation of fiber dispersion in FRCs and is a potentially viable quality control method for FRCs at early ages.
