Abstract: Work at Polytechnic University’s optical diagnostics laboratory is focused on the in-situ process monitoring of civil infrastructure materials. This research focuses on real-time monitoring of materials from synthesis through service, by characterization of early age reactions as well as identification of agents and products of deterioration. The potential of integrating functional polymers and optical wave-guides as an analytical tool will be discussed. In such hybrid sensing systems, analyte recognition is achieved either through the selectivity of fiber cladding or through unique spectroscopic signatures. The transduction is subsequently carried out by the evanescent field present at the core cladding interface, that is spectrally modulated according to the species present.
