In Memoriam - Prof. Fuminori Tomosawa (1940-2019)

Fuminori Tomosawa, of Tokyo Japan, passed away on Friday, November 8, 2019 at Toranomon Hospital. He was 79. He was born on 30th Jan. 1940 in Yokohama Japan and grew up in Niihama. Ehime, Japan. He graduated from The University of Tokyo where he became an assistant professor (1968-1970). Then, he worked as a researcher in Building Research Institute (1970-1987), and became a professor at the University of Tokyo (1987-2000), at Hokkaido University (2000-2003), and at Nihon University (2003-2006). He dedicated himself to the development and application of building materials. He served as a member of the Science Council of Japan and in 1984 he was awarded the AIJ (Architectural Institute of Japan) prize.

He was the president of JCI (Japan Concrete Institute) (2006-2008) and the vice-president of AIJ (2001-2002), and a member of RILEM Committee on Corrosion.

A unique soul, he was very earnest but enjoyed playing witty jokes on his friends. He will be greatly missed. A public memorial service was held on 4th Feb. 2020.
