Abstract: Concrete structures, especially larger structures and those in difficult service conditions can often be prone to premature deterioration. Some of these problems are inbuilt at the start, such as low cover or inadequate concrete quality for the durability exposure conditions.
Despite our knowledge in these areas, these factors continue to plague the industry. This paper reviews some of the range of NDT methods available and how they can be used to determine if new structures are satisfactory in terms of cover and concrete quality prior to their entering service. In addition, it examines how a range of defects in structures can be determined with existing and new approaches to NDT.
The paper examines the use of existing and new methods and includes a number of case studies to illustrate how NDT has been used or could have been used to deal with or prevent the inception of problems.
