Abstract: The microstructure of high-strength concrete is described. Considering the cement paste matrix and the interface zone between the aggregates and the bulk paste, prominence is given to the differences between normal strength and high-strength concrete. It is shown that the microstructure of high-strength concrete differs considerably from that of normal strength concrete by having a much lower
porosity, a more uniform hardened cement paste matrix, a very different distribution of the hydration products, a modified composition of the CSH-gel and a completely different interface zone. The literature review is supplied with experimental results obtained at the BAM. Based on the microstructural characteristics some aspects on the durability of high-strength concrete are discussed.
