Abstract: Traditional construction varies a lot from the current construction practices in terms of the
materials used and the construction methodology. For developing a compatible repair strategy
for historic buildings, the performance and significance of traditional materials and methods
should be understood. Lime slaking is a common practice in traditional construction and the
slaked lime is matured for several months. The lime putty is believed to attain higher
plasticity, workability and water retention capacity upon ageing. In certain parts of India,
there is a practice of adding organic additive during slaking, and the mix of lime putty with
additive is matured. The effect of adding the additive during slaking is not well known even
though it is believed to modify the characteristics of the final lime putty. In the present
research, plain lime putty and a lime putty with jaggery and gallnut mix, which is a common
additive in south India is studied using X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy and
particle size measurements
