Abstract: In current state-of-the-art stress analysis methods for bituminous pavements, bituminous
layers are either assumed to be linearized elastic or linearized viscoelastic solid-like. Most
analysis methods also use a quasi-static approach to solve vehicle loading problems. In
comparison, the response of bituminous materials at most temperatures is viscoelastic fluid-
like and the loading condition is also dynamic. Moreover, due to surface irregularities, the
actual load transferred to the pavement can be substantially higher than that usually assumedin traditional analysis methods.
In this study, dynamic effects of moving loads on pavements with viscoelastic fluid-
like pavement layers were investigated using the finite element method. Bituminous layers
were modeled using linear viscoelastic fluid models. Granular layers were assumed to be
linearized elastic. Movement of wheel loads at three different speeds – 20, 40 and 80 km/h
were simulated using the finite element method to study the rutting of bituminous layers. The
influence of dynamic vehicle loading on the rutting behavior of pavements was captured and
it was found to be substantial.
