Abstract: This paper presents an analysis of the healing and mechanical behaviour of asphalt mixture
containing encapsulated rejuvenators. First, the effect of microcapsules on asphalt self-
healing has been investigated at two different temperatures (5oC and 20oC) with variable rest
periods to measure the healing level at different times. The three point bending test was used
to crack asphalt beams and measure their strength before and after a resting period. Traffic
loading was simulated by applying confined compression to the test specimens, to activate
the microcapsules. In addition, the particle loss, strength and stiffness of microcapsules have
been investigated. It has been found that the microcapsules have a significant effect on
asphalt self-healing in short time and interestingly improved the mechanical properties of the
asphalt mixture.
