Abstract: With increasing public awareness on environmental impacts, much attention is now being
paid to sustainable waste management in the construction industry, especially on the carbon
footprint impact of the use of concrete. However, there is few information on the CO2
sequestration potential of demolished concrete debris, as well as the contribution of
carbonated recycled concrete aggregates (RCAs) to the properties of recycled aggregate
concrete (RAC). In this paper, the influencing factors on carbonation of RCAs are discussed.
Furthermore, the mechanical and durability properties of RAC prepared with the carbonated
RCAs were experimentally evaluated in order to verify the enhancement effects of the
carbonated RCAs on the mechanical and durability properties of concrete.
