Abstract: In an attempt to improve the service life of structures, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has been using high-performance concretes. One such concrete is self-consolidating concrete (SCC) which has high flowability beneficial to eliminating or reducing the common problem of consolidation.
This paper summarizes VDOT’s use of precast as well as cast-in-place SCC in various components of bridge structures. Bridge beams were cast using both the normal weight and lightweight SCC in precast plants. Drilled shafts, pier caps, and substructure repairs were prepared using cast-in-place normal weight SCC. The applications have been successful, leading to an increased use of SCC in VDOT structures and the inclusion of SCC into specifications.
