Abstract: In this paper, a model is developed to describe the behaviour of reinforced composites containing randomly orientated discontinuous fibres and subject to uniaxial tension. The model, named the Variable Engagement Model, is developed by integrating the behaviour of single, randomly oriented, fibres over 3D space with both fibre pullout and fibre fracture considered. Based on quantifiable material and mix parameters, the model is shown to be capable of capturing the stress versus crack opening displacement response for both plain and deformed steel-fibre reinforced composites in both the pre- and post-peak stages.
