Abstract: Fiber reinforcement is undoubtedly one of the most effective means of enhancing the impact and blast resistance of concrete. Unfortunately, the dynamic properties of fiber reinforced concrete also remain some of its least understood. Since 9/11, there has been an increased interest in developing a better understanding of the properties of fiber reinforced concrete under impact and blast loading and enhancing such resistance. This paper provides a historical perspective of our efforts aimed at understanding the impact resistance of fiber reinforced concrete and highlights some of the issues and challenges encountered. A synopsis of our current state of the art with respect to experimental and modeling attempts is presented. Finally, the paper attempts to chart our future course and identify areas where further research will be highly valuable.
