Abstract: The macroscopic performance of cementitious materials is determined by their nanostructure characteristics. Nanoindentation is an important and unique technique for characterizing the mechanical properties of materials at nano- and micro-scale levels. It has currently fuelled growing interests in measuring and quantifying the microstructure as well as the properties of hardened cement paste. In this study, the nano-scale properties of cement pastes blended with slag cement were tested via the grid-nanoindentation technique. The phase distribution, the volume fraction, the mechanical properties of hydration products and the packing density of globule in C-S-H gel are calculated on the basis of a large number of indentation data using the maximum-likelihood algorithm for deconvolution. The mechanical properties that obtained from nanoindentation tests are used to map the microstructure of the hydrated slag cement paste.
