Abstract: Tortuosity is an important parameter for characterizing the ions transport behaviors of cement-based materials (e.g., ions permeation and diffusion). This paper presents a two-dimensional (2D) Wave Propagation Method to quantitatively characterize system's tortuosity based on a binary image. The binary image of fresh cement paste's initial microstructure can be obtained by scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation. To reduce the effects of binary image's limited size, a modified periodic boundary is employed in this study. Finally, the determination about best values of two crucial factors are discussed in this paper.
