Abstract: We propose to model analytically the kinetics of hydration by means of a two mechanisms approach, consisting in the boundary nucleation and growth (BNG) kinetics coupled to diffusion controlled (JDC) kinetics. We first focus on alite hydration, which is the main constituent of Portland cement. The influence of the particle size distribution (PSD) of cement grains is highlighted. The effects of inert additions are investigated and then extended to the case of limestone filler. Fittings are performed using the experimental results for alite hydration according to different PSDs. Finally, we propose an extension of the model to cement hydration.
