Abstract:
This school is declared in the heritage of Mendoza, Argentina. The masonry structure is fired bricks, without columns or braces. During its lifetime, it has suffered considerable damages due to local earthquakes and lack of maintenance. The study methodology used has included: a detailed study, emergency decisions, analysis of the conditions, diagnosis and rehabilitation proposals. In high seismic risk zone, it is difficult to strictly follow the principles of different letters of restoration and the task is a challenge for structural engineering. The use of concrete or steel, the costs and availability of local technology are analyzed by finite elements models. The advantage of using concrete in their rehabilitation is to achieve the lowest cost and structural performance in accordance to standards, but from the standpoint of heritage we prefer the combination of steel structures that do not interfere with original structure and with the rehabilitation of reinforced concrete foundation.
