Abstract:
Computer simulation is an efficient tool for assessment of strengthening provisions in case of repair and rehabilitation of existing concrete structures. It is based on a non-linear finite element analysis and corresponding safety formats. Special numerical models can capture strengthening elements used to improve the bearing capacity, such as steel or carbon fiber reinforcement and special coating layers. This approach is illustrated on the case of existing railway bridge, which was thoroughly investigated in situ as well as by numerical simulations. Assessment of design resistance in accordance with present safety formats can be based on numerical simulation, while the safety check can be enhanced by exploiting a probabilistic approach.
