Abstract:
Among the processes able to cause deterioration of RC structures, carbonation-induced corrosion of reinforcement is generally seen as predominant. A significant amount of effort has been made to develop predictive models. However, since the carbonation mechanism is highly dependent on the environment, and since the material properties and engineering design parameters are uncertain, it remains difficult to accurately predict Service Life (SL). Therefore, in order to consider uncertainties in a rational way, an advanced physical and chemical model of carbonation able to account for weathering cycles has been developed in a probabilistic framework and illustrated with three concretes. The evaluation of the time-dependent probability of carbonation-induced corrosion has been assessed by calculating the reliability index β. By considering various β-target values, the model has been used as a tool to design the minimum concrete cover which is required for a SL of 100 years. Finally, a methodology has been proposed for identifying optimal planning inspection and repair strategies. The optimum inspection timing and relevant quality of repair mortar have been adjusted by maximizing the reliability index and minimizing the inspection and repair costs.
