The W.R Whitney Award is given from 1947 in recognition of significant contributions to corrosion science by the development or improvement of a theory that provides a more fundamental understanding of corrosion phenomena and/or the prevention of corrosion. It has been awarded previously for so recognized scientists as a U.R. Evans (1948), - H.H. Uhlig (1951) T. P. Hoar (1958), M. Stern (1964), M. Pourbaix (1969),  J. Kruger (1977), R.W.
