In memoriam Professor Luis Julián Lima

It is with deep sorrow and much love that the RILEM community mourns the passing of Prof. Luis Julián Lima (1936-2023).

Prof. Lima was a prominent Argentine engineer, Rector of the National University of La Plata (Argentina) for three consecutive periods, between 1992 and 2001, and Vice-Rector of the National University of the Northwest (Argentina, 2003-2007).

He was also a full member of the Academy of Engineering of the Province of Buenos Aires (since 1990) and a corresponding member of the National Academy (Argentina) of Exact Physical and Natural Sciences (since 1982).

He was a member of the Commission for the Memory of the Province of Buenos Aires and Vice-Rector of the National University of La Plata after the end of the last military dictatorship in Argentina in 1983. In 2017, he received the distinction of the National University of La Plata as an illustrious graduate, in recognition of his effort in forging and accompanying the growth of the university sector in democratic values.

He was the founding President of Lat-RILEM in the period 2010-2014; for this reason, he was named RILEM Fellow in 2015. He was also an illustrious member of fib (Fédération Internationale du Béton), being named as life-member in 2006 and as fib-Fellow in 2020.

In one of his last public events, he summarized his life achievements as: "My career is defined like this: I dedicated my life to learning and teaching."

RILEM expresa su profundo pesar por el fallecimiento del Prof. Luis Julián Lima.

El Prof. Luis Julián Lima (1936-2023) fue un destacado ingeniero argentino, Presidente de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata (Argentina) durante tres períodos consecutivos, entre los años 1992 y 2001, y Rector Organizador de la Universidad Nacional del Noroeste (Argentina, 2003-2007).

También fue miembro titular de la Academia de Ingeniería de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (desde 1990) y miembro correspondiente de la Academia Nacional (Argentina) de Ciencias Exactas Físicas y Naturales (desde 1982).

Su compromiso social fue más amplio que el de la ingeniería, siendo por ejemplo integrante de la Comisión por la Memoria de la Provincia de Buenos Aires y Rector Organizador de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata luego de terminada la última dictadura militar en Argentina en 1983. Por ello, en 2017 recibió la distinción de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata como graduado ilustre, en reconocimiento a su esfuerzo en forjar y acompañar el crecimiento del sector universitario en valores democráticos.

Fue el Presidente fundador de Lat-RILEM en el período 2010-2014, motivo por el cual fue también nombrado RILEM Fellow en 2015. Además fue miembro ilustre de fib (Fédération internationale du Béton), siendo nombrado como miembro vitalicio en 2006 y como fib Fellow en 2020.

Hace poco se hacía referencia a su larga trayectoria en uno de sus últimos actos públicos, y él prefirió resumirla: “Mi currículum se define así: dediqué mi vida a aprender y enseñar”.
