In Memoriam: Dr. Esperanza Menéndez Méndez

We regret the loss of Dr. Esperanza Menéndez Méndez, a dedicated expert in alkali aggregate reactivity, physico-chemical characterization and concrete durability, and a highly respected member of the international scientific community.

Dr. Menéndez made significant contributions to advancing the understanding and durability of cement-based materials. Her tireless work, spanning numerous Technical Committees (TCs), demonstrated her deep commitment to research, collaboration, and the pursuit of excellence.

As Expert of RILEM Technical Activities Committee from 2011 to 2015 and its Convener from 2015 to 2020, Dr. Menéndez provided invaluable leadership and insight. Her technical expertise was instrumental in her roles as TC Chair of 300-ARM, focusing on alkali-aggregate reaction mitigation, and TC Deputy Chair of 251-SRT, addressing sulfate resistance testing.

Her active engagement as a member of numerous RILEM TCs, including 211-PAE, 219-ACS, 238-SCM, 255-FRS, and 258-AAA, reflected her wide-ranging expertise and dedication to improving the performance of construction materials in challenging environments. Her recent service on the Bureau from 2018 to 2022 further underscored her commitment to RILEM.

Dr. Menéndez’s legacy lives on through the impactful work she accomplished and tireless dedication to her field. She will be deeply missed by the RILEM community.
