Cracking of mass concrete in Japan Mass concrete structures, such as long bridges, nuclear power plants, and underground tanks are affected by the presence of cracks triggered by the heat generation during the hydration of cement in the construction phase. This OPEN ACCESS paper on RILEM Technical Letters presents the remarkable progress of the control technologies of cracking in Japan, following a major review of the “Guidelines for control of cracking of mass concrete” by the Japan Concrete Institute.
