11th International Conference on Acoustic Emission & 27th International Acoustic Emission Symposium (IIIAE 2025)

The IIIAE is an international society comprising three advanced organizations: the Acoustic Emission Working Group (AEWG) in the United States, the European Working Group on Acoustic Emission (EWGAE), and the Acoustic Emission Division of the Japanese Society for Non-Destructive Inspection (JSNDI). Each organization has traditionally held international conferences annually or biennially. By rotating the hosting of this global conference approximately every four years among these regions, the IIIAE aims to create a worldwide network of AE associations. This initiative facilitates the sharing of cutting-edge AE technologies with groups and individuals engaged in AE science, thereby benefiting all members. The inaugural conference of IIIAE was held in Kyoto 2016 hosted by JSNDI, the second IIIAE was held in Chicago 2019 hosted by AEWG, USA and the previous IIIAE was held in Ljubljana 2022, Slovenia hosted by EWGAE.

The IIIAE 2025 World Conference is the only international event that brings together the three leading AE academic associations in the world. This conference aims to provide participants with opportunities to engage with cutting-edge global research and exchange ideas with leading researchers in the field. Additionally, fostering networks among researchers, including young professionals, and promoting international goodwill to address global societal challenges are key objectives of the conference. Furthermore, as AE technology is not confined to specific fields, the conference aims to provide a platform for interdisciplinary integration, where participating researchers can share their knowledge and experiences across different domains, leading to innovative solutions to new challenges. This interdisciplinary approach is considered a significant academic value of the conference. Nagoya, the host city, is a hub for advanced research in automotive and industrial technologies. By facilitating the exchange of information on themes such as "sensing technologies in civil and architectural engineering" and "cutting-edge automotive technologies," the conference is expected to inspire entirely new ideas and research topics, which are difficult to achieve in a single event.

The AE (Acoustic Emission) technology addressed in this conference, which is one of the non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, refers to ultrasonic-range sounds emitted when a force is applied to a material. AE occurs not only during material fracture but also during friction between materials or when gases or liquids leak. By analyzing the characteristics and origins of AE, it is applied in various fields, such as:

  • Assessing the integrity of structures and facilities.
  • Developing new materials (aerospace industry, others, understanding fracture mechanisms).
  • Investigating biological and plant ecosystems.
  • Applying to medical fields, focusing on AE from ligaments, bones, etc.
  • Detecting defects during manufacturing processes.

The new RILEM TC QPA - Quality and Performance Assurance of Additively Manufactured Cementitious Composites using Advanced Non-Invasive Techniques will be introduced to leading NDT researchers worldwide and the first workshop dedicated to this topic will be hosted on Thursday 6 November.
